Sadako and Her Thousand Paper Cranes

Sadako

The other day I was walking home from Ryan’s when I noticed this statue for first time. The colors of the origami cranes just jumped out at me. And for some reason, the longer I stared at it, the name “Sadako” came to mind. Upon further inspection, the inscription read “Sadako Sasaki” and suddenly memories rushed back of a book I had read in elementary school about a small girl in Japan who had died from a sickness caused by the radiation of the atom bomb. Her story and the Japanese legend that promised the folder of a thousand paper cranes a wish, came back to me in hazy memories of illustrations from the book. It was an interesting find, I hadn’t realized that this was Seattle Peace Park.
