I usually pick my books by:
1) walking around B&N and going “Oooh, that looks promising”
2) referrals from friends (which are a lot more reliable than the above)

That said, I got the perfect book for you, Dave:
Across the Nightingale Floor (Tales of the Otori, Book 1)

And I promise it has nothing to do with Mr. Darcy. :)

so how do you know what book you wanna read? i recently finished the Ender's Game sci-fi series because there was a reference to it from xkcd that i didn't understand. i felt like i wasn't the geek i ought to be and picked it up. currently i'm reading The Wheel of Time fantasy book series because there was all this buzz on the tubes about how the author wrote this huge 11 book epic tale only to die before finishing the very last book. i'm reading the series to see what the hubbub is all about. but i don't know how to find a book unless there's something stupid reason like that.
